2022, an amazing year.

2022, an amazing year.

The Elena Barraquer Foundation has operated on a total of 5,264 cataracts during the 14 expeditions it has carried out to countries in Africa and South America in 2022. A figure that exceeds expectations and places it as the Spanish non-profit organization with the best result ever obtained.

It is worth noting that the 5,264 surgeries were performed in the year that marks the 5th anniversary of the creation of the Elena Barraquer Foundation: “we are very satisfied with the achievements obtained in 2022 and it is a gift to reach our record in the year in which we celebrate our 5th anniversary as a Foundation”, said Dr. Elena Barraquer.

The 14 expeditions have been carried out in 12 countries: Argentina, Cape Verde, Congo, El Salvador, Madagascar, Morocco, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal and Uganda, where more than 8,000 medical consultations were carried out and a total of 3,000 glasses were delivered.

Although Dr. Barraquer has led part of these solidarity trips, many other cataract surgeons also lead campaigns. Teamwork is essential to obtain such good results. The ophthalmologists, nurses, anesthesiologists and field volunteers who have been involved are of different nationalities and have put all their efforts into ensuring that the most disadvantaged have recovered their sight, improving not only their living conditions, but also those of all the members of their families.

Next year, 2023, the Elena Barraquer Foundation wants to continue to surpass itself, increasing both the number of expeditions and the number of cataracts operated, so it is also looking to increase the team of volunteers who join its solidarity trips.

We must also thank the enormous support received by sponsors such as Mango, Kettal, Repsol Foundation, Equatorial Coca Cola Bottling Company, Unilever, Leo Messi Foundation, Grupo Godó, Banc Sabadell, Bufete Pintó Ruiz del Valle, Fundacion Privada Invest for Children; Fundación Privada Carmen y Luis Bassat, Renta y Corporación and many others. Without them all this work would be impossible to carry out.
