In March 2026, the Elena Barraquer Foundation participated in an extraordinary cataract surgery campaign in the city of Berazategui (Argentina), organized together with the Municipality of Berazategui and FACO Extrema Foundation.
The initiative consisted of a 24-hour surgical marathon, held at the San Camilo Municipal Ophthalmological Center, where medical teams worked simultaneously in four operating rooms to restore sight to patients in vulnerable situations.
During the campaign, nearly 400 free cataract surgeries were performed, mainly for patients over the age of 60 without medical coverage, who had previously been screened through ophthalmological examinations carried out in different neighborhoods of the municipality.
More than 100 healthcare professionals, including ophthalmologists, nurses and surgical staff, took part in the operation, which helped reduce waiting lists and provide treatment to patients who had lost their autonomy due to cataract-related blindness.
The Elena Barraquer Foundation contributed intraocular lenses, surgical supplies and medical support, making it possible for all procedures to be performed completely free of charge for the patients.
This campaign demonstrates the impact that partnerships between medical institutions, public administrations and humanitarian organizations can have in combating avoidable blindness and improving the quality of life of hundreds of people.
