Elena Barraquer, the doctor who restores sight to thousands of people
The latest edition of the Vanguardia Awards, held on Monday at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, brought together leading figures from the institutional, political, and social worlds. At a gala presided over by King Felipe VI and attended by leaders such as Pedro Sánchez, Salvador Illa, and Jaume Collboni, recognition was given to individuals and institutions whose work and commitment are leaving their mark on society.
Among the award winners, Elena Barraquer stood out in particular, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for a life dedicated to restoring sight—and with it, hope—to thousands of people in Africa and other developing countries.
A vocation that becomes a legacy
Born in Barcelona in 1954, Elena Barraquer grew up surrounded by a family tradition of ophthalmology. After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, she trained at prestigious centers in the United States and developed her international career before returning to the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center in 2002.
But her true legacy transcends private operating rooms. Convinced that medicine should be available to everyone, regardless of economic resources, she founded the Barraquer Foundation together with her father and brother, with which she began her first solidarity expedition to Senegal in 2004.
More than 25,000 lives transformed
After years of commitment, in 2017 she created the Elena Barraquer Foundation to continue these medical missions. Since then, her team has performed thousands of cataract surgeries, helping more than 25,000 people regain their sight and, with it, a life full of possibilities.
The award received at the Vanguardia Awards not only recognises her brilliant professional career, but also her tireless efforts to bring eye health to those who need it most.
An inspiring reminder that the light her hands restore not only illuminates her patients’ eyes, but also the path of solidarity and social commitment.
