Nigeria por David Berrones, cirujano

It has never been so easy to do your bit to help those born with fewer opportunities. The FEB not only brings you closer to that opportunity you’ve long imagined, but also allows you to witness first-hand how a life can be changed forever simply by your presence.

You don’t need much more than the desire to help, as you’ll be assigned to a team where your tasks are simple to learn but essential.

Every expedition feels unique, but in Nigeria I experienced something that profoundly transformed my understanding of the impact of what we do: seeing how people who had spent years in darkness regained the light in their lives; people who, had it not been for this week, were destined to spend the rest of their days that way.

The exhaustion and the never-ending work faded away in the face of the thrill of restoring sight to 641 people. They weren’t just numbers: they were stories, families and dreams being reborn.

I have no doubt whatsoever that life, sooner or later, gives back all the good you give. On this expedition, that exchange was immediate and profound: not only did I leave a piece of my heart in that beautiful country and with my team (who are now family), but I also took a piece of them back home with me. I return to my country with the certainty that, sometimes, changing a life alongside extraordinary people also changes your own forever.
